Pet allergies: How to Spot & Manage Allergy Season in Pets

Pet AllergiesSpring means warmer weather — and for many pets, allergy season. Pet allergies can cause discomfort and chronic issues if left untreated. Knowing how to spot pet allergies early and manage them at home (or with professional help) will keep your companion comfortable and healthy.

How to spot pet allergies Look for these common pet allergy symptoms:

  • Persistent scratching, licking, or chewing (especially paws or belly)
  • Red, inflamed, or scabby skin
  • Recurrent ear infections or head shaking
  • Sneezing, watery eyes, or runny nose
  • Hair loss or patchy fur If you notice any of these signs, track when they appear (seasonal vs. year-round) and what triggers—pollen, new bedding, or certain foods.

Home remedies vs. when to see a vet Home care can help mild pet allergies cases:

  • Rinse paws and belly with lukewarm water after walks to remove pollen and dust.
  • Use allergen-reducing wipes or a gentle hypoallergenic shampoo 1–2× weekly.
  • Swap to a limited-ingredient diet or novel-protein food if food allergy is suspected (ask your vet first).
  • Use a clean-air environment: HEPA filters, wash bedding weekly, and vacuum frequently.

See your vet if:

  • Symptoms persist after 2–3 weeks of home care
  • Your pet has open sores, worsening infections, or lethargy
  • Breathing is labored or the eyes are very swollen Veterinarians can offer allergy testing, prescription medications, medicated shampoos, or immunotherapy.

Grooming tips to reduce allergens

  • Regular bathing with a vet-recommended hypoallergenic shampoo reduces airborne allergens on fur.
  • Trim fur around paws and the belly to limit pollen collection.
  • Keep nails trimmed to prevent self-inflicted wounds from scratching.
  • Schedule professional grooming every 4–8 weeks during heavy allergy months.
